Course Purpose:

Marine Design course provides students with a broad introduction into marine design industry and understanding its’ purpose. Students will learn basic marine design concepts, including how AutoCAD skills are applied into the production of all facets from 2D design plans, all the way to 3D modeling of marine production components and final vessel assembly practices.

Course Description:

Students are introduced to ship terminology in order to understand the different types, parts and the distinct purposes of a wide range of marine vessels. This gives students an in depth understanding of how they will expect to use AutoCAD 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) Computer-Aided Design (CAD) modeling.

Applications Covered:

  • Components of Shipbuilding Industry: Shipyard and Manufacturing plant process discussions
  • Shipyard Terminology: Definitions of marine vessel components manufacturing processes
  • Shipbuilding Materials and Shapes: Construction material purposes for designs and use
  • 2D Drawings: Scantling, General Arrangement & Vendor Furnished drawings used for production
  • 3D Modeling: Discussions of 3D modeling and its’ use for shipbuilding production
  • Logical Build Strategy: Discussions of approach to shipyard layouts, best suited from materials in, to final build completion.
  • Piping Drawings and HVAC Drawings: Overview of piping and HVAC design concepts and rational for clean design
  • Electrical Systems: Overview of power generation, routing and intended use
  • Machinery Drawings: Overview of machinery design, purpose and integration
