This module is designed to give the entry level trainee an overview of the shipbuilding and repair industry and the career opportunities available in the industry. It describes the types of shipyard facilities as well as the construction process and identifies the government agencies and other bodies that establish standards for safety and construction methods.
Course Objective
Provide an overview of the maritime manufacturing/repair industry.
Define the supporting infrastructure.
Include economic benefits the industry brings.
Identify and explain the terms commonly used in the maritime manufacturing/ repair industry.
Major compartments and parts of a vessel and yard
Major terms used in different types of environments

Describe the different work processes related to shipyards, repair yards, and rigs.
Identify the different careers within the maritime manufacturing/repair industry.
Explain the purposes of OSHA (29 CER 1915), the Environmental Protection Agency, the US Coast Guard, the US Navy, the American Bureau of Shipping, Norway-based DNV, and Lloyd’s Register of Shipping.
Explain the maritime manufacturing/repair industry specific safety considerations.
