Nondestructive Testing: Visual Testing

Course Description

This hands-on Level 1 & 2 course is designed specifically for the maritime industry, focusing on visual inspection techniques critical to shipbuilding, maintenance, and repair.  Class meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 6–10 p.m.

Nondestructive Testing: Visual Testing covers various topics including:

  • Applications Including Metals, Welding, Chemical, Petroleum, Electric Power, and Aerospace
  • Physics of Light
  • Photometry
  • Vision Acuity Exams
  • Proper Use of Eye Charts
  • Digital Photography
  • Image Processing
  • Machine Vision
  • Magnifiers
  • Illumination
  • Surface Roughness
  • Calipers and Gauges
  • Analog and Digital Video
  • Video Connectors
  • Video Probe
  • Measuring with Borescopes
  • Metal Discontinuities at Different Stages of Processing and Service Life
  • Direct vs. Indirect Techniques

Course Objective

  • Improve internal quality control
  • Improve quality control as specified by the customer
  • Improve quality to meet or exceed regulatory codes, standards, and specifications
  • Recognize and improve on the occurrence of discontinuities and their root causes
  • Know how to measure part shape and geometry deviations
  • Know that the finished part meets contract specifications in all capacities
  • Know when to apply these applications, either during fabrication or in-service

Course Prerequisite

Students must be 18 years old or older and eligible to work in the United States. Students must submit a resume at the time of application for eligibility. In order to be considered for this course, you must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • currently working or have worked in procedures, specifications, codes, and standards for welding and inspection
  • currently working or have worked in quality control where fabrication and weldments are applicable
  • have experience in application ad control of base and filler metals
  • have experience as a welder, fitter, or inspector
  • have experience in the detection and measurement of weld discontinuities by application of an NDT method
  • have experience as a welding operator or tacker
  • have experience in repair welding
  • have experience in the qualification/certification of welders
  • have experience in teaching welding
  • have experience in developing and qualifying welding procedures and/or welders
